History
The 100 settlers that established the Jamestown Colony landed at Cape Henry on April 26th, 1607 and erected a granite cross on the site to commemorate the event before moving on to their new home. One of the earliest residents of Virginia Beach was Captain Adam Thoroughgood, who had a land grant for 5,350 acres. His four room brick house is still standing and has been restored as a museum, the oldest surviving brick house in America.
The town of Virginia beach was not chartered until 1906 and remained mostly undeveloped until World War II saw the establisment of Oceana Naval Airstation and other military bases nearby. The growth of the nearby city of Norfolk prompted the town of Virginia Beach to incorporate all of Princess Ann County into its city limits in order to prevent annexation by Norfolk. This land area has made Virginia Beach the largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
